Like any other reselling platform, Depop is a treasure trove of listings to be discovered by potential buyers. But before eye-catching product photos and irresistible bundles even get a chance to impact the buyer, they first need to be discoverable. Online shoppers typically use a site’s filtering function and search results before making a purchase, which is where tags come in handy.

Tags on Depop are keywords that sellers incorporate throughout a product description of a listing that gets pulled up to search results whenever someone looks for them. These usually correspond to a filter (e.g., category, brand, size, condition, color). Hashtags are relevant keywords distinguished by the hash key that typically appear on the bottom of a listing and work as they do on Instagram or Twitter.

Depop sellers are allotted a maximum of 5 hashtags per listing. A hashtag could be a combination of anything – from popular clothing brands or designer labels to overly generic terms like “shirts” and “pants” (or worse, random adjectives) – but wise resellers know and would include only hardworking hashtags with a high volume of buyer searches.

This article focuses on the tags that pertain to style, which is usually what potential buyers key in on this shopping app when narrowing their searches.

Below are the three main Depop style attributes you can weave in your description or use as hashtags. To achieve a consistent style in your listing, create a template that includes these style attributes to make sure you’re not leaving any applicable detail out.

  • Source – There’s a market for rare finds. Buyers are willing to pay a premium for vintage items that are certified authentic. Therefore, don’t tag a Champion sweatshirt as “true vintage” or “deadstock” if you know that it’s not. If you’re not sure, it’s safe to assume that it is not rather than to disappoint a buyer and get reported. There are have been cases when sellers try to pass off vintage-inspired garments from a popular fast-fashion brand as the real deal.

  • Age – Similar to source, this style attribute is an important detail that the more discerning shoppers look for in a description that would make them purchase or not. If you’re selling your own or family members’ preloved items, then you can add details that you know to be true, such as “Family heirloom Tiffany & Co. horseshoe chain bracelet from the 70s.” Otherwise, you can research online for reliable references that could ascertain a clothing brand’s era based on its logo style and other identifiers. Examples of this are the “90s Christian Dior sportswear collection” and “Early 80s Ralph Lauren plaid dress.” Other age tags are “Y2K” for anything from 2000 to 2009. Clothing and accessories are considered “Modern” if made from 2010 onwards.

  • Style – Aside from the tags/keywords and hashtags, there’s also a field on the bottom of the listing where sellers could include specific styles or trends. This includes styles like “Streetwear” (casual, loose fits popular with teens and younger generations– think Hypebeast, Supreme, H&M), “Sportswear” (think athleisure), “Retro” (vintage or pieces inspired by trends from the previous decades, like 60s mod style, 70s flower power, 80s neon fashion). Other styles on Depop include “Cute,” “Chic,” “Grunge,” and “Boho.”

Here are more tips in incorporating those keywords and style tags:

  • Do your keyword research before deciding which ones to include in your listing. Explore search results on the platform, and perform a Google search to generate ideas, especially if you’re unsure which style tags to include.

  • Sellers who source from thrift stores or Goodwill sometimes come across clothing in mint condition, but with the brand, tag cut off. In this case, you can mention “source unknown” or “brand unknown.” For brands that aren’t popular or easily recognized globally, mention the origin or the brand is known for. (e.g., “Aussie brand” or “An indie brand that practices sustainability in its production.”)

  • To add substance to your description, refer to reliable style guides online to know the specific clothing styles or cuts like sleeve styles (puffed, batwing, raglan, bishop), neckline types (e.g., Sabrina, halter, scoop), etc. You’d be amazed by how simple fashion vocabulary terms could make a difference in describing the details you’d like to highlight.

  • These last two ones are not exactly style tag tips but more friendly reminders: Upload product photos taken with natural lighting to depict your listing clearly and support any style tags you are including. If possible, include shots of the product taken in flat lays and worn by you or a mannequin. Also, don’t forget to always indicate any flaws in your listing to avoid future disputes.

Writing descriptions with style tags and keywords that convert to sales requires time and careful thought, but top sellers know it’s worth the effort. Good things take time, as with other aspects like sourcing and curating a great inventory. But resellers only have limited hours in a day. That’s why it’s important to identify the tasks you need to do yourself and those that you can delegate to an intelligent bot like OneShop. If growing your reselling gig from side hustle to a profitable full-time business is your 2022 mission, give the 7-day trial a go today.
